China/US
Cross-Cultural Expert

Another one of our experts on China is a Cross-Cultural Management Consultant, Trainer and Coach with more than 30 years of international experience in global leadership, management and strategy formulation as an international banker (Irving Trust, First National Bank of Chicago, Chase Manhattan Bank), consultant (Chase China Trade Advisors, Global Strategies) and appointed public official (Head of New York State’s International Division and overseas offices).

His wide experience globally includes more than 30 years of specific business experience with China including management of a Beijing bank representative office, head of Chase Manhattan Bank’s New York China Group, senior advisor/project consultant to the Commission of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade of Jiangsu Province, China, and managing a consultancy involved in US corporate negotiations for many of the early US-PRC joint ventures. In addition, he has managed a global network of offices for New York State involved in trade and investment promotion efforts across Asia in Japan, Hong Kong, China, Korea, and Taiwan.

Recent representative projects have included developing and implementing a human resources project for the US office of an Asian government involving cross-cultural management issues, communication and team building; executive coaching for senior Asian executives operating in a US business environment in industries including financial services, pharmaceuticals and consumer products; a team integration project involving the US and Shanghai offices of a major US consumer electronics company; executive coaching for a range of senior US executives relocating to Asia; facilitating cross-cultural competency in management, leadership and communication for American, Singaporean and Indonesian personnel in US manufacturer’s Indonesian joint venture; designing and training a program on effective cross-cultural leadership for senior management at the New York office of a major Chinese bank; and designing and facilitating multi-country training for the US, China, and European offices of a US medical products company involving a range of cross-cultural business issues including management, leadership, quality and virtual team integration.

This trainer received a BA in Asian Studies and Political Science from University of California, Santa Barbara, with a year of study at Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Master of International Affairs in International Finance and Economic Development from Columbia University’s School of International Affairs and has written and spoken widely on various aspects of Asian, Chinese and global business.

For more than 20 years, this trainer has worked as an intercultural trainer and consultant advising global corporations about how to conduct business effectively across diverse cultures.  She has traveled extensively to Asia, Europe, Australia and Latin America on consulting projects and has developed assessment and intervention programs to improve corporate performance and profitability.  She has developed and delivered global workforce development solutions to several Fortune 500 companies across a wide variety of businesses, such as financial services, aerospace, technology, telecommunications, banking, finance, chemical, food and retail industries. Past clientele includes companies like Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Boeing, GE, Intel, AT&T, Rohm & Haas, AlliedSignal, CocaCola, Kodak, Pepsi, and Liz Claiborne.

An intercultural expert on China, this trainer also develops and delivers customized global business programs and language courses for expatriates and business travelers living and working in China.  Her latest projects have taken her to the People’s Republic of China to deliver training programs for a major energy producer preparing Chinese nationals to work more effectively with Westerners and vice versa. She also recently facilitated workshops in Asia on leadership development for a major global beverage company.

Her business experience includes working with firms from Asia investing in the United States, teaching them how to negotiate their relationships with their American partners, as well as assisting in conflict resolution and relationship improvement. She has worked as a consultant with U.S. government agencies, including the federal court system, and international volunteer organizations.  She has also traveled to various countries to train and advise other cross-cultural specialists in developing effective global business training and consulting solutions.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English language and literature in Taiwan and obtained her Master of Arts degree in education from the United States.

She currently lives in Poughkeepsie, New York.  She and her family enjoy frequent international travel, and members of her immediate family speak a total of eight different languages – English, Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Hakka, German, French and Finnish.

This cross-cultural consultant has worked for over 10 years with the Chinese and U.S. government, high-tech, manufacturing, biotech and healthcare industries. She works closely with U.S. and Chinese businesses to establish mutually beneficial relationships, inspiring enthusiasm and teamwork across cultures. She assists American firms with sourcing vendors, understanding business practices, Chinese culture, working and managing Chinese employees, negotiations, transmission of reports and contracts, translation and interpretation, lends her skills to interpret the language, as well as teaching about culture and motivations of the Chinese workforce. For Chinese businesses, she interprets foreign cultural practices new to them.

Since 2006, this expert has worked with American and European companies, including high tech corporations and multibillion projects. Some of the companies she has worked with include: Intel FAB68 Project, Honeywell C919 project, Westinghouse AP1000 project, GE, Motorola, On-Semiconductor, LSI, Sandia National Lab, Boeing, Port of Portland, PTC, QVC, ADM, Disney, American Express, Grainger International, SanDisk, Cisco, Wal-Mart, Marvell, Bayer, SVTC, Bosch, and many more. She helped them with tasks such as doing business in China and how to facilitate the differences in business practices to build trust along a wide spectrum of clients from senior executives, high level and business managers, to spouses and children, to rural farmers-turned-factory workers. She has successfully completed “Global Executive Coaching” at SIIC. She has trained over 2000 people/families within the last 4 years, which included over 400 expatriates and their families relocating to China who she helped prepare for the cultural insights, language, social practices, and expectations needed to experience successful assignments. Additionally she worked with over 400 Chinese who came to the States for a high-tech company overseas training, including both face to face training as well as Webinars. She has delivered, with high praise, the “Working with China and Advanced Managing of Chinese workers” for over 800 Americans as well as “Working with America” for over 400 Chinese clients. With her high levels of energy, flexibility in teaching technique, and avid love of learning, she challenges trainees to meet and exceed their learning goals. This cross-cultural specialist also attended the 13th SIETAR USA in Washington D.C. in 2013 and presented a China session at the conference titled, “Me Generation – The Young Generation and Today’s China,” which was well received and earned enthusiastic praises.

Born and raised in Beijing, she graduated from Tianjin Medical University, and worked as a medical doctor at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital in the early 1990’s. In 1994 she transitioned to Motorola in Tianjin, to direct a staff of 12 doctors and nurses providing primary and emergency care for 10,000 employees. After training at Motorola’s Arizona facilities, she returned to Tianjin to organize Motorola’s Environmental, Health & Safety Standards (EHS), and Occupational, Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) programs. She worked closely with human resources to develop consultations, assessment, treatment and training for mental health stability among employees. She moved to the U.S.in 1997 to pursue a dual Master’s degree at Arizona State University, and to work in the Motorola (Arizona) EAP program. She visits China frequently, and speaks fluent English and Mandarin Chinese.

Cross-Cultural Expert

Another one of our trainers was born in northeastern Mexico. He grew up as a “blended-culture kid” spending his childhood and teenage years in the Midwestern United States, Canada’s Quebec, Germany’s Bavaria, and northeastern and northwestern Mexico. He speaks Spanish and English fluently, and has a basic knowledge of French, German and Mandarin Chinese. He holds a B.Sc. in Aquaculture Management and a M.Ed. in International Relations.

In the mid 1990s, he began devoting himself as a intercultural trainer within Mexico and China, working in academic, governmental and corporate settings, delivering cross-cultural awareness programs and “Doing Business in…” seminars. In addition, he conducts relocation programs at MNC’s (Multinational Companies) for expatriate executives and their families to enhance intercultural competence during their living and/or working experience in China.

In 2004 he was involved in CCTV’s (China Central Television) Spanish Channel project. He has also been a visiting scholar at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, Shanghai International Studies University and Hangzhou’s Zhejiang University.

He deeply enjoys outdoor activities such as trekking, photography and traveling. In his spare time he delivers seminars to Chinese high school and college students on world traveling, sharing his traveling experiences to more than 33 countries in the six inhabited continents.
